At beautifood, we take a holistic approach to develop a sustainable business.

What does a holistic business mean to us?

Our holistic approach is to look at our business as a whole, from the big picture perspective.

We care about the overall wellness.

We strive to create a more positive lifestyle and environment for our customer and community.

Even though we are a small start-up business, sustainability and environment are at our forefront. We are eco-conscious.

We are taking small steps towards sustainability. We will be the first to admit that we are not perfect. We do have opportunity areas that need improvement. (And we welcome and love all suggestions from customers and suppliers!) As a small company, it can be difficult and costly to be 100% sustainable. As we grow, we will strive to keep improving!

Here are some examples of our holistic approach in business:

Our Avocado Hair Oil bottle...Deconstructed.

Bottle deconstructed edit.jpg

What's in each bottle?

  • WHAT is it? Our bottle is an Amber Glass Boston Round bottle.

  • WHY we use it? We use glass bottles (instead of plastic) because glass can be recycled indefinitely to create more glass. Plastic, on the other hand, cannot be recycled indefinitely. Every time plastic is recycled, the chemical composition breaks down into a lower grade plastic and eventually becomes unrecyclable and sits in landfills or pollutes our oceans. Also, in case you're wondering about the Amber color - we use this brown glass because the real ingredients inside can breakdown from light. The brown glass gives the formula a dark storage place for best performance and maximum shelf life.

  • HOW we can improve? At this time, we think glass is the best primary packaging! Let us know if you think of any improvements. :)

  • WHAT is it? We use a Polypropylene (PP) dropper with a rubber bulb and a glass pipette.

  • WHY we use it? We believe a dropper is the best way to measure and apply the correct amount of Avocado Hair Oil, while also minimizing spillage.

  • HOW can we improve? Parts of this dropper are plastic and rubber. Our dropper supplier ensures us that the dropper is recyclable. However, we would prefer to not use plastic or rubber. If you are a packaging supplier interested in helping us, please Contact Us with alternative solutions.

  • WHAT is it? We use a certified compostable label.  We use PURE Labels for our 100% biodegradable labels, made by Elevate Packaging. It is a bioplastic made from tree pulp.

  • WHY we use it? We love our planet and know that each sustainable packaging choice we make matters! Our label is certified compostable in accordance with ASTM D6400 and EN13432. Even the label sticker adhesive is compostable! The label is also non-GMO (non-genetically modified).

  • HOW can we improve? Eventually, we would love to print our text directly onto our bottles and eliminate labels. We have to use dark colored bottles to protect the ingredients, so this may be challenging to view text on a dark color bottle. We are always open to explore new alternatives!

  • WHAT is it? This is a perforated plastic PVC shrink wrap band.

  • WHY we use it? First and foremost, this is a safety seal for the customer's protection. Every bottle is sealed after production. This ensures that when the customer receives the bottle, the product has not been tampered. Secondly, we ship our packages via USPS mail, and the post office requires liquids to be sealed either by shrink wrap or in a Ziploc bag. A small shrink wrap is less waste than an entire plastic bag!

  • HOW can we improve? Our supplier ensures us that the shrink band is recyclable. However, we would prefer to not use plastic. If you are a packaging supplier interested in helping us, please Contact Us with alternative solutions.

We don't have any!

This is one way we are REDUCING waste.

What is secondary packaging? Many brands put their product in a box, or in other words, in a second packaging.

Secondary Packaging.jpg

Not all secondary packaging is bad though.  We don't want to give the impression that brands who use secondary packaging are bad.  There are many reasons for having secondary packaging:

  • Sometimes the product itself is very small (like an eye cream or lipstick), so the brand cannot fit all the information on the product itself, and they need the second box to have more writing space.

  • Sometimes a secondary packaging is required if the product is sold in a physical retail space. This protects the product and helps to minimize theft. (We sell direct to consumer online, so we don't have to worry about this yet.)

  • Secondary packaging can make a product feel more prestige and luxurious. This issue was something we at beautifood debated. We wanted to live by our sustainability and holistic approach, but we also want our product to feel luxurious as well. We see these brands, especially perfume and Holiday gift boxes, that use excessive, excessive secondary packing. It's just so wasteful! Does it really make the product more luxurious if you are just throwing away the packaging as soon as you purchase it? For now, we choose to NOT use secondary packaging.

Our Shipping Package...Deconstructed.

What's in each package?

  • WHAT is it? We ship your Avocado Hair Oil in our custom-made, pink beautifood box.

  • WHY we use it? This box doubles as a shipping material and contains some marketing info. Our box is made from at least 50% recycled content, and is 100% recyclable. Please recycle!

  • HOW can we improve? If you are a custom box supplier, please Contact Us as we are always open to alternative options.

  • WHAT is it? All the details on our bottle are above.

  • WHAT is it? We use a pink tissue paper to wrap your Avocado Hair Oil.

  • WHY we use it? We believe this provides a soft, cute touch to your package. Also, it can provide a little protection to help soak up liquid in the rare case that the bottle leaks.

  • HOW can we improve? Please recycle the tissue paper. Tissue paper is recyclable. However, because of low fiber content in tissue paper, it yields less recycled paper than other papers. We suggest that you can reuse the tissue paper if you need to wrap a gift for someone else!

  • WHAT is it? We use biodegradable packing peanuts made from natural sources.

  • WHY we use it? We use packing peanuts to protect the glass bottle from breaking. We avoid non-recyclable Styrofoam, and instead use biodegradable packing peanuts. The packing peanuts dissolve in warm water, or can be thrown into compost piles. Or you can reuse if you need to pack or mail something!

  • HOW can we improve? We think this is the best option for maximum protection of the product!

REDUCE examples

  • NO Secondary Packaging box

  • Our home office reduces energy consumption by using solar panels.

  • We also participate in OhmConnect energy reducing hours where we turn off power and conserve. This is really great for digital detox & brainstorming sessions!

REUSE examples

  • Reuse your bottles as desk paperweights or flower holders! Pinterest always has great inspiration.

  • We try to recycle or reuse all packaging that is shipped to us. We reuse boxes and packing peanuts whenever possible.

RECYCLE examples

  • At this time, we do not offer a free recycling program. As a small start-up, we cannot afford the shipping costs to have the consumer mail us back empty products. Besides, every piece of our product is recyclable, from the glass bottle to the cardboard shipping box. The only potentially questionable piece is the dropper because it is made from glass, plastic, and rubber - Our supplier ensures the dropper is recyclable, but you need to check with your local recycle program.

  • If you have trouble recycling our product, here are a few companies and references that can help:

    • Origins recycles and accepts product packaging from any brand in its stores. Visit Origins for more information. This program is currently available in North America. Find a Store on their website to find the nearest retail or department store location.

    • Garnier has partnered with TerraCycle for a recycling program that allows people to send back their empties from any brand -  they offer free shipping or physical drop-off locations. Visit Terra Cycle for more information.
