Now, let's decipher our ingredient list!

Let's breakdown each ingredient in our Avocado Hair Oil and why it's important for your hair.

PERSEA GRATISSIMA (AVOCADO) OIL

Avocado oil is our hero ingredient. We chose to spotlight Avocado because the fruit is native to the Southern California region, where beautifood is founded. Avocados are packed with many nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, making this superfood our top beautifood. Avocado oil is a rich hair oil with a slightly heavy consistency, providing deep hydration and moisture to your hair. It absorbs quickly into the hair without leaving a greasy feeling. Avocado oil contains Vitamins A, B, E, and D. Vitamin E helps repair hair damage, while Vitamin B nourishes and promotes hair growth. Monounsaturated fatty amino acids penetrate deep into the hair shaft and help the hair retain moisture. Avocado oil contains high levels of antioxidants, like Vitamin E, which help protect hair against environmental damage like pollution, sun, ocean/beach water, dirt, and sweat. Avocado oil helps seal cuticles and lock in moisture to provide your hair with long-lasting hydration. The smooth, nourishing texture increases elasticity and makes hair more flexible, and therefore prevents breakage & helps detangle hair. The oil helps unclog hair follicles and stimulate new hair growth.

AVOCADO

VITIS VINIFERA (GRAPE) SEED OIL

Grapeseed oil is an effective moisturizer and conditioner. It's lightweight and won't leave hair feeling greasy. Grapeseed oil is extracted from the seeds of the grape (after they have been used to make wine).  The seeds contain the most powerful antioxidants, like Vitamin E.  It locks in moisture to prevent frizz and and help dry, brittle hair. Grapeseed oil has a high linoleic acid content, helping to promote hair growth. Grapeseed oil helps restore strength and shine & luster to hair.

GRAPESEED

ARGANIA SPINOSA (ARGAN) KERNEL OIL

Argan oil is often dubbed "liquid gold" for its amazing qualities. It is best known as a conditioning agent. Argan oil contains Vitamin E, an antioxidant that promotes healthy hair growth by revitalizing hair cells. It regenerates hair follicles (at the root of hair on the skin, the sac from which the hair grows) by boosting cell production. Argan oil contains fatty acids, omega-6, and linoleic acid, which help refurbish hair and help it regain shine. Argan oils acts a moisturizer, which is great for fighting dandruff and dry scalp. Argan oil helps split ends and fights frizz, and can act as a heat protectant. Argan oil promotes shinier, softer, more manageable hair. Argan oil is super lightweight, and does not leave a greasy film on the hair. It absorbs quickly, and is great for dry, damaged hair.

ARGAN

SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) OIL

Jojoba oil, pronounced {ho-ho-ba}, is one of the lightest natural oils available. Jojoba oil is easily absorbed into the hair, giving a weightless shine and luster. Jojoba oil contains liquid wax esters, whose properties closely resemble a human's natural sebum (oily substance produced by glands on your skin). Sebum is necessary to help moisturize hair and prevent it from drying out. Jojoba oil has a balancing effect on our sebum production. Jojoba oil acts as an emollient, helping to fill in cracks on the surface of hair cuticle to give softer hair. It helps repair damage from heat and styling. Jojoba oil is rich in essential nutrients vitamins E and B, helping to repair hair and promote hair growth.  Jojoba oil also contains minerals like silicon and zinc. Jojoba has a high concentration of natural iodine, which gives it anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.

JOJOBA

ROSA MOSQUETA (ROSEHIP) FRUIT OIL

Rosehip oil comes from the hip of the rose plant, the berry-like part that is left behind after the flower blooms, and where the seeds reside. Rosehip oil contains essential fatty acids, such as linoleic, oleic, omega 3, and omega 6. These fatty acids help repair and renew damaged hair. It increases hair elasticity, helping to prevent breakage. Rosehip oil is a dry, lightweight oil that adds shine and luster. Rosehip oil also contains Vitamin A, which helps normalize oil production and is good for both oily and dry hair.

ROSEHIP

CITRUS BERGAMIA (BERGAMOT) PEEL OIL

Bergamot orange essential oil is cold-pressed extracted from the peel of the bergamot orange fruit. It has a fragrant citrus aroma. Bergamot is used in aromatherapy to stimulate and relax the scalp. It stimualtes blood flow to the scalp, encouraging hair growth. It can also soothe and condition the scalp and hair. The fatty acid content helps tame frizzy hair. The antimicrobial properties of Bergamot are inhibit the growth of bacteria and help get rid of silicone and chemical build-up.

BERGAMOT

CITRUS PARADISI (GRAPEFRUIT) PEEL OIL

Grapefruit essential oil is cold-pressed extracted from the peel of the grapefruit. It has a citrus, fruity aroma, which can contribute to very uplifting, positive, and relaxing experience. Grapefruit oil keeps hair smelling fresh, and adds shine and luster without an oily buildup.  Grapefruit oil has a high concentration of Vitamin C, an important part of hair structure. It has antiseptic and astringent properties, which are beneficial to oily scalps.

GRAPEFRUIT

CANANGA ODORATA GENUINA (YLANG YLANG) FLOWER OIL

Ylang Ylang, pronounced {ee-lang ee-lang}, essential flower oil is distilled from the flowers of the Cananga odorata genuina. It is a beautiful sweet, floral and refreshing scent. It is rich and delicate. Ylang Ylang oil can help balance and normalize the scalp's sebum production, and acts as a natural conditioning agent. It can act as a stimulate to aid hair growth. Ylang Ylang has antiseptic properties that help to cure germs and irritants that could lead to hair loss. Ylang Ylang has antioxidant properties to help reduce scalp inflammation. Ylang Ylang is used in aromatherapy to reduce stress by its relaxing properties. Stress is a known contributor to hair loss. Ylang Ylang calms the nervous system, reducing anxiety, stress, tension, etc. and helps reduce hair fall.

YLANG YLANG

ROSA DAMASCENA (ROSE) FLOWER OIL

Absolute rose essential oil is a very romantic, rich, floral rose scent. You can smell many deep layers of complex rose aromas. Rose acts as an astringent to help control oil. It acts as a scalp tonic, helping to freshen the scalp. Rose petals contain many vitamins that naturally moisturize and soothe the hair and scalp.

ROSE

Why beautifood is different [better] than other hair oils.

Let's start by answering this question:

Do you know what's inside your current hair products?

Take a look at your current hair oil, hair serum, or any hair product that you currently use.

Take a look at the front of the bottle.

Do you see hero ingredients on the packaging? For example, does it say "argan infused" or "coconut infused".

Now, turn the bottle around and take a look at the ingredient list on the back.

Do you see a bunch of chemical names you don't understand?

Do you see something like this?

OTHER BRAND HAIR OIL*

(*Please note, this is NOT the ingredient list of any specific brand of hair oil. This is a generic list that represents the ingredients in many of the popular hair oils on the market today.)

INGREDIENTS: DIMETHICONE, DIMETHICONOL, CYCLOTETRASILOXANE (D4), CYCLOPENTASILOXANE (D5), CYCLOHEXASILOXANE (D6), CYCLOMETHICONE, OCTAMETHYLCYCLOTETRASILOXANE, PHENYL TRIMETHICONE, CAPRYLYL METHICONE, FRAGRANCE / PARFUM / PERFUME, {SOMEWHERE IN HERE THEY DECIDE TO LIST A REAL INGREDIENT LIKE ARGAN OR COCONUT}, CI 26100 (RED 17), CI 47000 (YELLOW 11).

Does the above list look like your hair oil?

If you answered "NO" (your list doesn't contain all these chemicals), then GREAT JOB.

You either got lucky and purchased a real ingredient based hair oil. Or you're an ingredient guru who researched ingredients & you chose that product because it contains real, natural ingredients. Either way, great!

Unfortunately, many of you will answer "YES" (the above list looks like your hair oil).

  • Many of you will find large amounts of silicones (words ending in -methicone, -methiconol, -siloxane) in your hair oil.

  • Many of you will find fragrance / parfum / perfume in your hair oil.

  • Many of you will find CI (colour index / colorants / dyes) in your hair oil.

  • Finally, you will see your REAL ingredient (argan or coconut as we've used in this example) pretty far down on the ingredient list. Ingredients are listed in descending order - meaning the list starts with the ingredient that has the largest concentration or percentage, and then continues largest to smallest. This means your hair oil only contains a small amount of the REAL ingredient!

Did the marketing trick you? Did you think you were really getting Argan or Coconut oil?

Instead, you just purchased a product that's mostly made from silicone: cheap, man-made plastic that companies use as fillers rather than give you real, natural ingredients.

WHEW! Lot's of technical stuff!

Please keep reading to find out how beautifood's Avocado Hair Oil is different [better] than popular hair oils on the market.

No hidden ingredients.

Every ingredient you can read and understand.

NO NASTIES.

Read below to find out what's on our NO NASTIES list and why we don't use those ingredients.

NO NASTIES LIST.

NO SILICONES

Silicones are man-made plastics that many companies use as fillers in your products instead of giving you real, raw ingredients. The most common silicone you'll see in your ingredient list is Dimethicone, but there are others. Just look for words ending in -methicone, -methiconol, and -siloxane. Although MANY companies consider silicones to be vegan and cruelty-free, silicones are not biodegradable.  Every time a person uses products with silicones, the silicones end up washing down your shower drain into our oceans. They therefore affect animal life during the disposal process. Other sources say that silicone production and manufacturing can also pollute the environment. So although the ingredient itself may be vegan and cruelty free, beautifood's stance is to avoid this ingredient altogether to minimize negative environmental impact and harm to animals.

Not only are silicones bad for our environment, but our belief is that they are also bad for your hair.

Many hair products on the market today contain silicones. Why do companies use this synthetic product? The positives of silicones is that they make the hair appear smooth, slippery, shiny, and conditioned. Silicones can make dry, damaged hair look repaired and healthy, but DON'T BE FOOLED! It's only appearances and looks. Silicones do not actually repair!  Silicones give an illusion of shine, but it's a fake shine from plastic.  Daily use of these silicone-containing products causes silicones to build up and clog your hair. The silicones coat your hair and prevent the real, raw, GOOD ingredients from being delivered to your hair. With use of silicones, you're basically coating your hair in plastic, and not allowing the vitamins and nutrients to penetrate your hair shaft. For a short time, your hair might look great, but long-term damage is actually occurring.  Over time, your hair will dry out because the real conditioning nutrients aren't getting to your hair. Your hair may become even more dry, frizzy, brittle, and even BREAK!  For some people, silicone use can actually lead to hair loss. YIKES! Let's just say NO to silicones.

Please note, if you're accustomed to using products with silicones, your hair might feel different at first when you use our Avocado Hair Oil. You may not feel that silky, plastic feeling as you do with products that contain silicones. Don't worry. This is normal. Our product has 100% real oils. Instead you will feel REAL moisture and REAL hydration. By allowing these oils to soak and penetrate your hair shaft without silicone blockage, you are getting the best possible nutrients to help hydrate and nourish your hair.

NO SULFATES

Sulfates are the ingredients that give shampoos and cleansers those lathery, foamy suds. The most common sulfates in the beauty industry are sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). Technically speaking, sulfates are a surfactant (they lower the surface tension between two substances), or in other words a detergent. In the case of personal care products, they attract both oil and water, and make a lather to cleanse your scalp. The problem is, sulfates cleanse your scalp of dirt and grime, but also of your own natural, healthy oils.  Sulfates strip oils from your hair and scalp. They can cause scalp and skin irritation, dryness, and redness. Sulfates can be "too efficient", and remove too much oil, making your hair rough, brittle, and dry.

NO PARABENS

Parabens are used as preservatives in the beauty industry. Parabens are ingredients that usually end in -paraben (examples are methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben). A preservative is a substance that prevents the product from decaying or developing bacteria / mold, or in other words, a preservative prevents the product from going bad. Preservatives can prolong the shelf-life of a product. Why do companies use parabens? A large reason is that the majority of products on the market (especially shampoos and conditioners) contain water as the highest concentration ingredient. Any product that contains water must have a preservative. Water creates life, including bacteria. Why are parabens in our NO NASTIES list? Certain parabens have been linked to hormone disruption. Studies show they can create an increased risk for certain types of cancers and reproductive toxicity.

Hair products can touch your scalp and skin, so beautifood says NO to parabens.

NO PHTHALATES

Phthalates {pronounced "thal-ates" - just ignore the "ph"} are plasticizers used to moisturize and soften. Phthalates have been linked to hormone disruption and developmental & reproductive toxicity. The European Union has restricted and banned use of 4 common phthalates [butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)], but you can still find phthalates in US cosmetic and beauty products. Be careful, because some companies do not list phthalates in their ingredient list, but instead hide the ingredient under a general ingredient "fragrance".

NO SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCE / PARFUM / PERFUME

A fragrance is a scent, or a perfume or parfum. The word "fragrance" on an ingredient list can be very mysterious. Many companies consider fragrance to be a trade secret, and they do not have to reveal their ingredients. It can be made from synthetic materials. Certain synthetic fragrances could cause allergies, sensitivities, asthma, headaches, etc. Fragrances could contain phthalates (explained above), which are bad for your health. Fragrance could also contain alcohols, some of which could be drying for your hair.

At beautifood, we use real scents - we use absolute essential oils. These essential oils are not only beneficial for their aromatherapy properties, but they are also beneficial for your hair.

NO COLORANTS

Colorants (also known as dyes or CI - Color Index) are used to add color to a product. Why do other companies use colorants in their hair oils? Look back at that "Other Brand Hair Oil" ingredient list - most of the ingredients in that hair oil are silicones. They need to use dyes (such as Red and Yellow) to make their product look more like a real oil. They are trying to trick you into thinking their product is more natural. Colorants can be toxic to organs and respiratory systems. They can also cause skin irritation

At beautifood, we do not use colorants. The beautiful golden, yellow color of our Avocado Hair Oil is 100% natural.
